In the middle of what’s already been a stressful, infuriating year, I’m continuing to work on my projects and expand on the universes which I’ve had so much fun creating. With Draxton settled into Seshinaar with his Minshaari, I’ve turned my focus back to Barif and the Wolves of Sorrows series.
I’ve completed the first draft of Jelayan, fourth in the Wolves of Sorrow series of short novels. Yay, go me! While I’m working on another project instead of the one I should be working on, I’ll let Jelayan simmer for a few weeks before returning for a second pass. The photo which inspired this flash piece is one I took at Lake Wenatchee in Washington State. The piece of driftwood, snarled and smoothed by time and water, looked (to me) like a dryad emerging from a protective shell of roots. The story took off from there. Enjoy!
In going through an old notebook, I found this piece I wrote several years ago. I dusted it off, made some changes, and offer it up as a bit of flash fiction for your enjoyment. It’s a shorter piece, just under 800 words, but one I’d held onto to see if it became anything more.
